Litton to Pen-y-ghent

Walk 8 - Litton - Pen-y-ghent - Foxup - 13 miles - 7 hours. A good but long circular walk avoiding the normal ascent of Pen-y-ghent from Horton Back to Upper Wharfedale Page

Pen y ghent summit Ingleborough

Start from Queens Head pub at Litton. Walk towards Halton Gill for 300m. Turn left and cross the footbridge across the Skirfare. Cross fields diagonally to emerge at walled track near a barn. Turn right along track. After 300m or so look for track on left (through gate). This is the old coach road to Stainforth. Follow the track up the hillside for 3½miles to emerge at the minor road to Stainforth.

On reaching the road maintain the same direction and walk along road for 1 mile. Turn right at Dale Head to walk along a farm track. Turn right at Churn Milk Hole and continue to top of Pen-y-ghent. From the summit follow the wall to Plover Hill. Then bear left dropping steeply downhill to meet the Horton to Foxup track. Turn right and continue to Foxup. Turn right at Foxup and follow left hand bank River Skirfare back to Litton via Halton and Hessleden on well defined paths emerging at the foot bridge across the river.

A visit to the Queens Head at Litton is recommended with its micro brewery
