Arncliffe to Malham Tarn

Walk 6 - Arncliffe - Malham Tarn - Hawkswick Cote -12 Miles - 6 hours Back to Upper Wharfedale Page

Malham Tarn The bridleway over to Hawkswick Cote

Start at the green in Arncliffe. Walk along track to right hand side of pub. After 400m cross stile on the left  and proceed along path (known as Monk's Road). This climbs up hillside and follows contour of valley for 3 miles before eventually bearing  slightly left to reach Middle House. After a gate bear right (not to farm) walking diagonally across field, pass over a stile and cross another field until Malham Tarn reached. Turn left along the side of Tarn and then after 200m take left hand fork passing under Great Close Scar.

Turn right at the T junction along track to reach Street Gate. At Street Gate turn sharp left (almost doubling back) and along grassy path down to ford near gate. After the ford turn right up the hillside. The track is now very clear passing through several gates for about 4 miles descending the hillside until Hawkswick Cote Farm reached. Turn right along the road (towards Grassington) and then left along narrow road until River Skirfare reached. Turn left along the path immediately before river {and bridge) and follow left hand river bank all the way back to Arncliffe.

A shorter version can be attempted missing out the tarn by carrying straight on after Middle House- this will save 2 miles or so.
